Salient to Investors:

Fareed Zakaria said:

  • ISIS is the most significant terrorist organization we have ever faced, becoming what al Qaeda always wanted to be – ISIS is developing a very large, deep and sophisticated base with the ability to sell oil and wheat at a bargain.
  • Mao Tse Tung said that gorillas swim like fish in the water, meaning that have to be friendly in order to be able to stay there – ISIS has been able to take so much land and move within the population, stepping into the Sunni discontent about being ruled in Syria by Alawites.
  • Turkey out of frustration just let anyone into Syria, which fuelled the worse kinds of people forming and building what is now ISIS.
  • Air strikes are not going to defeat ISIS, nor will fighting it from Iraq alone. The real challenge is in Syria. Churchill said if Hitler had invaded hell, he would have joined forces with the devil. Richard Haass says in the Middle East the enemy of your enemy is still your enemy.

Michael Hayden at Chertoff Group said ISIS is a very powerful local and reasonably powerful regional terrorist organization but without global ambitions. Hayden said ISIS competes with al Qaeda and because there is no better way to show street credentials among the jihadist community than a successful attack against the West it is only a matter of time before ISIS attempts to attack the US homeland and the West in general.
