Prof Dame Sally Davies said the rise in drug resistant infections is comparable to the threat of global warming – we are not using antibiotics effectively in countries. Davies said routine infections could become lethal because we’ve run out of antibiotics: there is only one useful antibiotic left to treat gonorrhoea.

The World Health Organization says the world is heading for a post-antibiotic era unless action is taken, where many common infections will no longer have a cure and again kill unabated.

Prof Hugh Pennington at the University of Aberdeen said drug resistance is a very, very serious problem and drug companies have run out of options because all the easy drugs had been made – no new wonder drugs are coming. Pennington said people are going abroad for operations or sex tourism and bringing home drug resistant infections like gonorrhoea or TB.
