The Institute of Medicine and National Research Council study shows Americans have shorter lives and poorer health, despite spending more on health care than any of the 16 other rich countries in the study.  Americans eat too much, abuse drugs too often, wear seat belts too rarely and commit violence against each other too often. America has higher levels of poverty and safety net programs that are too inadequate.

America ranked the worst in still births, infant mortality, low birth weight, in chances of a child dying before age 5, in health of kids aged 5-19, in injury deaths among 15- to 19-year-olds.
