Hispanic Workers Lack Education as Numbers Grow in U.S. – Bloomberg 11-13-12

Hispanics are the fastest growing component of America’s workforce, yet over 80 percent of Latinos ages 25 and older don’t have a bachelor’s degree, and the unemployment rate for Hispanics was 10 percent in October versus 7.9 percent nationally.

The  National Center for Education Statistics says 14 percent of Hispanics ages 25 and older had a bachelor’s degree or higher in 2011  versus 51 percent for Asians, 20 percent for African-Americans, and 34 percent for whites.

Of 47 million new workers entering the labor force between 2010 and 2050,  80 percent will be Hispanic, whose share of the workforce will grow to 18.6 percent by 2020 and to 30 percent in 2050 versus 15 percent in 2010.

Richard Fry at the Pew Hispanic Center said more than half of the new workers employers will work with will be Latino. The number of 18- to 24-year-olds was a record 16.5 percent share of all college enrolments in 2011 versus 11 percent in 2006.
